Royal Tombs
The capital of ancient Sumer was the city-state of Ur. Ur was located on the Euphrates River. When the river changed course the Ur lost its wealth and power. In 1922 a discovery was made, an archeologist named Woolley was digging in Ur. He discovered a huge gravesite with over 1400 bodies. The graves contained ordinary items like pots, jugs, tools and trinkets. Woolley and his team discovered a collection of weapons made out of gold and lapis lazuli. When Woolley and his team dug through a roof they found the Royal Tombs of Ur, the graves of royalty. They found rings, necklaces, earrings and headdress made out of gold. They also found bodies of soldiers and ladies in waiting. This discovery in 1922 told archeologist a great idea about ancient Sumerian daily life.
