Little Bird

While I was in university I spent a month studying in Prague, Czech Republic. I had the opportunity to visit a WWII concentration camp called Terezin while I was there. As I toured around the grounds I noticed a lot of little birds were nesting in the walls and trees that surrounded the camp. I wondered if they had been there back when the concentration camp held prisoners, and how watching their freedom might have made the prisoners feel. When I returned to my tour bus, I wrote this poem from the point of view of a prisoner:

Little Bird

Little bird, little bird,
Your wings, they carry you so fast.
Little bird, little bird,
You come, but your fate is not cast.
You observe this world so full of pain,
Little bird, why do you remain?

Your nest is warm, safe, and secure.
Your purity somehow can endure.
Here my innocence begins to wane,
Little bird, why do you remain?

My heart aches to see your flight,
Your freedom mocks my dreams at night.
Your liberty, it knows no shame,
Little bird, why do you remain?

My days grow darker as I wait,
My dreams are not aligned with my fate.
My heart flies to you, but in vain,
Little bird, why do you remain?
